“Devotions From the Heart”
Christ My First, My Always*
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
The Bible commands it, the hymnist and poets have written about it and we, His children desire to live it. Christ first, our life, our hope, our eternity.
This statement begs us answer:
How important is this command to us as believers and Why is Christ first?
Christ is first because He is God. We are His creation. We, as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, are His blood-bought children. He is first because He loved us first and gave us new life in Him. He has purchased us. We belong to Him. We are His Bride and we are His bond-servants. We are commanded to be “alive” to Christ” and dead to our former life of disobedience, rebellion and sin. We have been called to love Him, in obedience, service and faithfulness and so our allegiance is first to Christ and His righteousness and everything else for this life is added to us.
Christ commands us to worship Him and Him alone. He says:
“Thou shalt have no other gods (‘Elohim = rulers, judges, divine ones, angels, gods”) before me.” Exodus 20:3
We are not to place our husbands, children, families, careers, desires or anything else before Him. We are not to seek “methods” or “means” that are contrary to His Word and we are not to rely on our own hearts because they will condemn us. We are fickle people and we are sinners and cannot, apart from God’s grace, do what is right and acceptable. We are to seek His righteousness and Kingdom first. We are to seek Him for our salvation and in everything pertaining to life and godliness. As His children, we can only seek righteous living by prayer, reading His Word, following His precepts and by obedience to His Word, the Bible. This means we are “women of the Book.” Thus, we place our lives as “wives” (and His Bride) under His Headship. We seek His Kingdom answers and His rule over our lives. We are His. We are Christ-followers. He is our first, our always, in everything.
Q4U: Did you know? Anything placed before Christ in our heart and life is rebellion and idolatry? “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. . .” I Samuel 15:23a
Praise Him today for His forgiveness and gracious heart to you and for forgiving our trespasses and rebellion in failing to seek Him first and His righteousness in our lives.1/

Have Thine own way;
Hold o’er my being Absolute sway.
Fill with Thy Spirit Till all shall see
Christ only, always, Living in me.”
