Our Earthly Family

The Family

A family — parents and grandparents and children, the larger combination of three or four generations, or one little two-generation family — is meant to be a picture of what God is to His Family.  “Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.  From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed.  Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  For thou has been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy” (Psalm 61:1-3).  Our earthly family should be the ones to whom we want to run, cry, telephone, telegraph — when we feel overwhelmed by failure!  An earthly family is meant to be a shelter, a solid, dependable “ear” that will hear and understand, as well as a place to which to run.  Then this family, these parents, this father and mother are to make clear to their children the understanding for the faithfulness of God.  We should be able to say, “You know something of the way we love you.  You can always come to us in any kind of trouble.  You will always find forgiveness and understanding and help.  Yet we are nothing in comparison to God, our Heavenly Father whose faithfulness is perfect compared to our imperfection.”
