“But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who of God is made to us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption; so that, according as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.” 1Co 1:30-31
As true, biblical Reformed believers, these truths can only bring joy of heart to us weary travelers on the road home to glory and encourage us to press on in the matters of life in which Christ has placed us. We want Christ, nothing more or less, no additions or subtractions, only Christ alone through faith alone. It is Christ alone who justifies the sinner. Christ has done it! Truly this is grace and peace. Thanks be to God!
I love how the WCF/WLC spells it out in plain language for us:
WLC: Q. 70. What is justification?
A. Justification is an act of God’s free grace unto sinners, in which he pardoneth all their sins, accepteth and accounteth their persons righteous in his sight; not for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but only for the perfect obedience and full satisfaction of Christ, by God imputed to them, and received by faith alone.
I cannot over-emphasize the importance of us understanding the doctrine of justification (especially today) because of its biblical importance as to how we look at our own salvation and standing with Christ and thus the “practical” application of that understanding reflected in daily life. We are “women of the Book” and as we prepare for our next ReformedWomen Bible-Book study “What is a Reformed Woman Today?, I would highly recommend as additional background help to that study, the OPC’s excellent “Report on Justification” (which includes its “Declaration on Justification”) You can download it in its entirety in .pdf format. This will also serve alongside our bibliography of recommended reading.
